We don’t publish tips or selections for today’s racing, and this page doesn’t contain any. If you searched for the best horse racing tips for today, here is where the established sources publish theirs every morning, and the race-day checks that decide whether a tip is still worth backing by the time you place it.

Where today’s tips are published

These sources put out free tips for British and Irish racing every racing day, usually by mid-morning.

  • Racing Post tips: free race-by-race tips and previews, plus subscriber-only content.
  • Sporting Life tips centre: a daily nap and race previews, with free Timeform selections.
  • Timeform free tips: best bets for each meeting and selections based on Timeform’s ratings and flags.
  • At The Races tips: race-by-race guides for British and Irish meetings.
  • Newspaper naps: each national paper’s tipster names a nap, their best bet of the day. The Racing Post Press Challenge shows how each newspaper tipster has been doing this year.

For more free options, including community sites where you can see each tipper’s record, see our guide to free horse racing tips. If you like to plan the night before, our guide to horse racing tips for tomorrow covers declarations and early prices.

Race-day checks before you follow a tip

A tip written at 7am was based on what was known at 7am. Racing changes through the day, so run through these before you bet.

1. Non-runners

Horses are withdrawn on the day for all sorts of reasons, from a change in the ground to a minor injury. Two things follow:

  • If your selection is a non-runner, a single on it is void and your stake comes back. In a multiple, that leg is treated as a non-runner and the bet carries on with the remaining selections.
  • If another horse is withdrawn late, winning bets struck at fixed odds before the withdrawal can be reduced by a Rule 4 deduction, because the field is weaker than when you took the price.

Our Rule 4 calculator works out the deduction, and the bet calculator lets you mark any leg as a non-runner and see what the rest of the bet pays.

2. The going

The official going can change on the morning of racing, especially after overnight rain or watering. Some horses handle soft ground far better than fast ground, or the other way round, and a tip written for good ground may not hold up on soft. The going is shown on every racecard, such as the Racing Post racecards or Sporting Life racecards.

3. The price you can actually get

A tip’s value depends on the price. If a horse tipped at 8/1 is 4/1 by the time you get to it, the bet has changed. Check the price before you place it, and use the odds calculator to see what chance of winning a price implies.

4. Best Odds Guaranteed

Many bookmakers offer Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) on British and Irish races: if you take a fixed price and the starting price is bigger, you are paid at the starting price. It takes some of the risk out of backing a tip early in the day. Terms vary by bookmaker, so check when BOG starts and which races it covers.

5. Each way terms

Many tips are each way bets. The place terms (1/4 or 1/5 of the odds, and how many places are paid) depend on the number of runners and the type of race, and some bookmakers pay extra places on big races. Put the terms on your slip into the each way calculator to see both parts of the bet.

If you would rather receive selections by email each morning, these paid services cover British racing. What follows is what each seller says about its own service. We haven’t verified the results.

Betting always carries a risk of loss and no tipster, system or staking plan can guarantee a profit. Only stake what you can afford to lose, and set a budget before you start. Gambling responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

The Racing Post, Sporting Life, Timeform and At The Races all publish free tips for British and Irish racing every racing day, and each newspaper tipster names a nap. Our free tips guide lists more sources.

A single on a non-runner is void and the stake is returned. In a multiple, the bet continues on the remaining selections. If a different horse is withdrawn late, a Rule 4 deduction may reduce your winnings. Our Rule 4 calculator shows how much.

Most free tips appear in the morning, once the day's racecards and going reports are out. Paid services set their own times: Beat the Favourite, for example, says its tips go out between about 10.30am and 11.30am.
