What is a Lucky 15?

A Lucky 15 is a full-cover bet on four selections in different events. It contains 15 separate bets: 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 four-fold accumulator. Because the singles are included, one winner is enough for a return.

It is a Yankee (11 bets) with the four singles added, which is why it is so popular for a day's racing: you get the big accumulator payout if everything wins, and something back if only one or two do.

How much does a Lucky 15 cost?

The cost is the unit stake times 15. A £1 Lucky 15 costs £15 and a 50p Lucky 15 costs £7.50. Each way doubles it: a £1 each way Lucky 15 is 30 bets and costs £30.

Pick Per bet to type the unit stake (what most betting slips ask for), or Total to type what you want to spend and let the calculator split it. An each way bet is two bets per line, so it costs double.

Lucky 15 bonuses

Many UK bookmakers add extras to a Lucky 15, but the terms are theirs, not a rule of the bet. Common ones are double (or treble) the odds when only one selection wins, and a percentage bonus when all four win. Tick the bonus boxes in the calculator to model them, and check your bookmaker's terms before relying on the figure.

Lucky 15s at the Cheltenham Festival

Each day of the Cheltenham Festival has seven races, so four selections from one day's card fit a Lucky 15, as long as each is in a different race. Each way Lucky 15s are popular on Festival handicaps; our Cheltenham betting guide explains how the place terms change from race to race.

Frequently asked questions

£15 win only, because there are 15 bets at £1 each. A £1 each way Lucky 15 costs £30.

Four, each in a different race. If you have three selections the equivalent bet is a Patent; with five it is a Lucky 31.

A Yankee is the same 11 doubles, trebles and four-fold without the 4 singles, so it costs 11 units instead of 15 but needs at least two winners to return anything. A Lucky 15 costs more and pays something on a single winner. Neither has better odds; they spread the same selections in different ways.

They do different jobs. A four-fold accumulator puts the whole stake on all four winning, so it pays more if they all come in and nothing if one loses. A Lucky 15 spreads the stake over 15 bets, so it pays less per pound when all four win but still returns money with one, two or three winners.

It is a fair way to back four fancies with some cover, but it is still 15 bets against the bookmaker's margin. With short-priced selections, one or two winners often return less than the 15 units staked. Use the calculator before you bet to see what each outcome pays.
