How to use the bet calculator

  1. Choose the bet type. The calculator shows the right number of selections for it.
  2. Type the stake and say whether it is per bet or the total.
  3. Switch on Each way if you backed each way, and set the place terms on your slip (1/4 or 1/5 of the odds, and how many places).
  4. Type the odds for each selection. Fractional (5/2), decimal (3.5) and American (+250) all work, and so does "evs".
  5. Mark each result. The returns update as you type.

Pick Per bet to type the unit stake (what most betting slips ask for), or Total to type what you want to spend and let the calculator split it. An each way bet is two bets per line, so it costs double.

Mark each selection as Won, Placed (each way only), Lost or Void. A void (non-runner) is settled at odds of 1.0, so the bet carries on as a smaller bet. Open Rule 4 / dead heat on a row to apply a deduction or a dead heat to that selection.

The number of bets doubles when you go each way, and so does the total stake.

How the returns are worked out

Every bet inside a multiple is settled on its own. A double pays your stake multiplied by the decimal odds of both selections; a treble multiplies three, and so on. Full-cover bets such as the Yankee simply add up every double, treble and bigger combination that came in.

Each way bets add a second line at a fraction of the odds. A winner pays on both lines; a horse that only places pays on the place line, and in an each way multiple the place line carries on through every selection that won or placed.

The calculator applies Rule 4 to the winnings only (never the stake), splits the stake on a dead heat, and treats non-runners as odds of 1.0, which is how UK bookmakers settle them.

Worked example

A £1 Yankee (11 bets, £11 staked) on four horses at 2/1, 3/1, 5/2 and 4/1. Three win and the 4/1 loses, so only the bets made of the three winners pay.

The selections

  1. 12/1Won
  2. 23/1Won
  3. 35/2Won
  4. 44/1Lost

£1.00 per bet, 11 bets.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply your stake by the decimal odds to get the total return, then take away the stake to get the profit. A £10 bet at 5/2 (3.5 in decimal) returns £35, which is £25 profit plus your £10 back. For multiples, multiply the decimal odds of every selection together first.

The payout (or return) is everything the bookmaker pays you, including your stake. Profit is the payout minus what you staked. The calculator shows both.

Yes. Mark the selection as Void. It is settled at odds of 1.0, so a double with a non-runner becomes a single, a treble becomes a double, and so on.

Lucky 15, 31 and 63 bonuses vary from one bookmaker to the next, so they are off by default. Tick the bonus options under the calculator to add a doubled-odds consolation for a single winner or a percentage bonus when every selection wins, and check the exact terms on your bookmaker's site.

You don't need one. This calculator runs in your phone's browser, works with one hand, and updates as you type. Add it to your home screen if you use it often.
