Using the super yankee calculator
The super yankee calculator opens at 50p a bet with five sample prices. Replace them with your own (5/2, 3.5, +250 or evs all work) and mark each selection Won, Lost or Void. Choose Total instead of Per bet if you would rather type what you want to spend. For an each way bet, switch on Each way, set the place odds and places paid from your slip, and mark horses that finished in the places but did not win as Placed.
From Yankee to Super Yankee: what the fifth selection adds
A Yankee covers four selections with 11 bets. Add a fifth and every new combination that includes it joins the bet:
| Bet | Yankee | Super Yankee | Added |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doubles | 6 | 10 | 4 |
| Trebles | 4 | 10 | 6 |
| Four-folds | 1 | 5 | 4 |
| Five-fold | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Total | 11 | 26 | 15 |
So one extra selection more than doubles the stake, from 11 units to 26, and all 15 new bets depend on that fifth horse. The payoff is at the top end. At 50p a bet, the four selections priced 5/2, 3/1, 7/2 and 9/2 all winning return £392.93 in a Yankee; add an 11/2 winner as the fifth and the Super Yankee returns £3,003.90. If the fifth loses, you have paid 15 extra units for nothing.
A Super Yankee is the same bet as a Canadian; bookmakers use the two names for it.
Super Yankee cost at 10p, 50p and £1
| Stake per bet | Win only (26 bets) | Each way (52 bets) |
|---|---|---|
| 10p | £2.60 | £5.20 |
| 50p | £13.00 | £26.00 |
| £1 | £26.00 | £52.00 |
A Yankee at the same stakes costs £1.10, £5.50 and £11 win only. If you would rather start from a budget, choose Total: £13 total is 50p a bet win only, or 25p a bet each way. Want a return from a single winner? A Lucky 31 adds five singles to the same 26 bets, for 31 units.
How an each way Super Yankee pays
Each way, the bet is 26 win lines and 26 place lines. A winner counts in both; a horse that only places counts in the place lines alone, at the place fraction of its odds. The win lines need every horse in them to win, so most of the money in a mixed result comes from the place side.
Take the worked example below: 50p each way, two winners at 5/2 and 7/2, two placed at 3/1 and 9/2, and the 11/2 unplaced. Only one win line pays (the double of the two winners, £7.87), while the four horses that won or placed fill 11 place lines. At 1/4 odds the bet returns £36.11 for £26; the same result at 1/5 odds returns £29.47.
The place side can even carry the bet with a single winner. With the 5/2 winning and the other four all placing, no win line pays, but all 26 place lines do: £104.06 back at 1/4 odds for the same £26. Check the place terms on your slip, and see our each way calculator for how they work.
